Property Tax Savings
DFW Homestead Exemption
If you bought a home in Texas and live in it as your primary residence, the homestead exemption lowers your property tax bill every year you own the home. You file once, with your county appraisal district, and it is completely free.
- It is free to file. There is no fee, ever. You file directly with your county appraisal district using the links below.
- File after you move in. New homeowners can apply as soon as the home is their primary residence. You do not have to wait for a new year.
- Your ID must match. Your Texas driver license or state ID needs to show the property address before you apply, so update it first.
- One home only. The exemption applies to your primary residence, not rentals or second homes.
- Missed it? You can file late and still capture up to two prior tax years.
Ignore mailers offering to file your homestead exemption for a fee. They are not from your county. Filing is free, takes minutes, and the appraisal districts themselves warn against these services.

Your home’s county is on your closing documents and your tax statement. Each tile goes straight to that county appraisal district’s homestead exemption information or application forms.
